Squirrels, advice and information:
Squirrels are rodents that are small to medium sized and belong to the family sciuridae. The most common type of pest squirrels in the United Kingdom are tree squirrels that can be identified by their large bushy tails, small claws for climbing and grey, red or black fur. Black and Grey varieties are not native to the UK and efforts are being made to control their population, they have endangered the native red squirrels which is now a rare sight in many areas.
Squirrels are intelligent creatures and notorious pests, particularly in residential areas. They will eat the food from bird feeders, pull out bulbs from plant pots and flower beds, inhabit attics and garden sheds, and squirrels will also chew their way through a variety of objects, both edible and inedible. Squirrels must maintain their teeth as they grow continuously so this chewing action prevents them from growing too large, attics and sheds should be kept sealed to prevent damage to the wood and structure by gnawing squirrels. In some parts of the world they are also a major cause of power outages; they often climb poles and crawl across lines, and climb into transformers, capacitors and other equipment and substations in search of food. Occasionally they will be electrocuted if they touch a conductor and a grounded element at the same time causing a short circuit.
