The ability of snakes to see, smell and hear is very limited. The majority of their sensory inputs of heat, humidity and ph values are obtained by their flickering tongues. This input is analysed by their Jacobsen's organ. The active ingredient of Defender, napthalene, gives off a vapour which causes the Jacobsen's organ to block the sensory information, causing the snake to retreat from the treated area.

Defender has been extensively tested on Middle Eastern snake species, both venomous and non-venomous.
