**Invasion of the Ladybirds!

**Invasion of the Ladybirds!
Description
Ladybirds (aka lady birds, ladybugs or lady beetles) invade homes and buildings between October and December, looking for somewhere warm to hibernate for the winter. In warm, heated homes they may continue to be found indoors during the following months.

These small, round beetles are particularly attracted to light colored homes, and are drawn to the heat that the buildings reflect. They tend to prefer older homes and once ladybirds have penetrated the house, they can be hard to get rid of.

Ladybirds release pheromones. These help the insects to find each other and also let future generations know of a good place to "camp out" for the winter, and the pheromones don't go away easily. The chemical "scent" can remain year after year, not only on the outside of a structure, but also within the walls, where ladybugs tend to hide before emerging into your home. The yellow stuff you might see from time to time is their blood. Releasing some of its blood is one way the ladybug can protect itself. The blood smells quite unpleasant and signals to a predator that this ladybird is not good to eat.

Ladybirds will happily - and largely harmlessly - hibernate in the cracks in your window frames all winter, only to emerge in the spring and get to work on killing the aphids which would otherwise feast on your rose bushes.

If you really can't stand having them around any more, one of the most effective ways to get rid of them, and keep them away for months, is to spray your window frames with Dethlac insecticidal lacquer. This product forms a protective barrier for months, killing any crawling insects which come into contact, within hours.

For more general use, Protector CIK is an excellent, high potency crawling insect spray, or for a non-toxic (to humans) alternative, try Oa2ki Insect Killer Spray.

For a more humane option, try Colibri Natural Anti Insect Aromatic Essence or Diffuser Kit to deter the insects from staying in your living space.

This method will not, however, get rid of the ladybird pheromones which attract them to return to the building. To prevent ladybirds from getting in, you would need to make sure all cracks around windows, doors, clap boards, pipes, etc. are sealed up. This can be very difficult to do, particularly in older buildings.
