Flies, information and advice:

Flies are insects that belong to the order Diptera and can be identified by their single pair of wings and a pair of halteres (structures used for support attached to the flies thorax). There are a tremendous number of different types of flies, it is estimated that there are 240,000 species and only about half of these half been described in scientific journals. They are of utmost importance for the ecology but they also present a major hazard to humans, and can cause both medical illnesses and economic damage.

Flies are known as disease transmitters and carry everything from malaria to yellow fever and encephalitis right through to diarrhoea and dysentry. Many flies feed or settle on excrement, decaying food and dead bodies and will then carry pathogens from these locations to anywhere else they land, including foodstuffs that are left uncovered.

Treatments for flies:

To successfully treat an infestation it is vital that the source of the infestation is located and removed as soon as possible. Good housekeeping is vital when attempting to control an outbreak of flies, all food should be kept covered and refrigerated if possible to avoid contact with insects.
